Loofah

Grow your own bath sponge- and if you're really adventurous harvest some of the Luffa fruit while they are still young and try eating them! The flowers are also edible. Grow up a support and screen out your neighbours with this novelty climber.
How to grow

Related to zucchini, squash and pumpkins, loofah loves a nutrient rich soil, so dig in plenty of well-rotted manure where they are to grow. They germinate easily in warm soil, gardeners in cooler areas can start their seedling in pots in a warm spot and plant out after risk of frost has passed. Water regularly during the growing season and mulch well to conserve moisture and eliminate weeds. Leave on the vine to ripen. Harvest when the fruit becomes brown and exceptionally light. Pick before frost. Remove the outer skin and then all seeds and miscellaneous material. You may need scissors. Wash with warm soapy water and leave to dry. Cut into usable lengths. Enjoy!
